This really is a “how long is a piece of string” question.

Many builders do not know exactly how much their bots cost. This is not because we are bad at managing money, but because many teams rely on sponsorship from people who enable us to outsource parts of the fabrication and the true costs become hidden.

There is however a rough rule of thumb that I have heard a number of times that in my experience gets you into the right ball park, that is that a combat robot costs you ~$100 per pound. On Battlebots we compete with 250lb heavyweights which would put the cost around $25,000. There are some people who will be able to come in way below that, and others I know with much more.

Most of these bots are not built out of items found in a scrap bin. They use very high end components or ones that have been custom built. A small example would be the switches most of us use to turn the weapon and drive on and off at the start and end of a fight. These are $97 each (and are actually made by Team Whyachi) you need at least 2 on the bot and couple of spares. So with a bit of shipping that is $400, just to safely turn it on and off. Some bots have many sets of these.

So as well as all the stuff that goes into a bot there are lots of hidden costs. Most builders have day jobs and need to take time off work for filming. We also do not count the hundreds of hours spent in design, build and test that could for most people be spent doing similar tasks but being paid for it. Also you are also not going to get very far if you do not have access to a well equipped workshop. That may be covered by membership to a well equipped makerspace but increasingly I see builders investing in tools like CNC Mills that have ~$30,000 price tags. Then there are the spares. As has been noted on the show and in social media this year a number of teams have spare robots as well as cases full of spares. Often unused custom spares are worthless after a season as they will not fit next years bot.

So next Friday night when you settle down to watch the show on Discovery and see a bot go flying through the air, or have large pieces of it ripped off, just think of it as being a nice family saloon car compressed down into a 250lb robot. Then please feel free to go spend some dollars with the sponsors who helped make them possible.

For season 5 in 2004 I had a lightweight (60 pound) BattleBot that cost about $2000 to build and a heavyweight that cost $6000. I could use the same transmitter and charger for both, so a little saving there if you have multiple bots. The remainder of the parts were not interchangeable.

When going to a tournament, you will need to bring spare batteries, motors, wheels, weaponry and armor with you. That way you can repair battle damage between fights. All the spares add up as well.

Travel expenses add up also. I always got away without paying freight, but more difficult to avoid airfare and hotel unless you live in the San Francisco bay area.
